The Squires' Trophy 2016 - Final standings
2016
Gullane was the venue where literally everyone went low, whether it be at courses 1, 2 or 3. Again, October was the month of choice and no one expected another mild dose of weather for the Squires, this time playing in Scotland for the first time. Squire, in similar fashion to 2015 was quick out the blocks and burns up Gullane No. 2 but only beats Rossco with a better inward half. Squire could not continue this form and fell away in dramatic fashion the following day round Gullane No. 1 after finding umpteen pot bunkers. Cathal, who was gunning to win a third Squires' Trophy in four years beat his day 1 round score by a phenomenal 10 strokes while shooting a career best round. Mick followed up a good score on Gullane No. 2 with another superb round at Gullane No. 1 to lie only 2 strokes back from Cathal. Bazza also performed superbly around Gullane No. 1 and sat 4 back going into the third round. Gordie was another to do well around Gullane No. 1, bagging an incredible five birdies to lie 5 off top spot. Cathal, the battle-hardened squire was under pressure from Bazza, Gordie and Mick all day but managed to close out yet another Squires' Trophy victory but by only 2 strokes from Mick. This was despite Mick edging ahead overall by a stroke early in the back nine but he could not close out as Cathal came back. A third straight excellent round from debutant Mick meant he finished 2nd overall in what was a great start to his Squires career. Gordie, who was also piling on the pressure had the consolation of winning the day's major to finish 3 behind with Bazza a stroke further back.
